Letteratura e Cultura Araba I

OBIETTIVI FORMATIVI

Il corso si prefigge di fornire le nozioni di base della storia della cultura e letteratura araba seguendo una lettura diacronica che presti particolare attenzione agli aspetti economico-sociali e antropologici della società beduina e alle forme artistico-letterarie e culturali con cui questa società si è espressa. Entro questo quadro sarà dato ampio spazio alla nascita e storia dell’islam, nei suoi aspetti evenemenziali e politici, religiosi e storico-artistici. Sarà infine offerta un’ampia introduzione alla poesia preislamica e islamica dei primi secoli, nonché alla prosa coranica.

OBIETTIVI FORMATIVI (DETTAGLIO) E RISULTATI DI APPRENDIMENTO

Questa unità didattica si propone di fornire ai partecipanti una conoscenza generale della cultura e della produzione letteraria nel mondo arabo, nel periodo compreso tra il VI e la metà dell’VIII secolo dell’era cristiana. Ampio spazio sarà dedicato agli aspetti culturali che hanno caratterizzato la penisola arabica in epoca preislamica, e alla nascita dell’Islam, con particolare riferimento agli eventi storici che costituiscono gli atti fondativi della comunità musulmana. Si farà riferimento ai dibattiti religiosi che hanno animato il mondo tardo-antico per mettere in evidenza gli elementi che collocano la tradizione islamica in un rapporto di continuità con le altre religioni abramitiche. Sarà offerta un’introduzione esaustiva delle caratteristiche formali della poesia preislamica e della prosa coranica. Saranno trattate anche altre fonti in prosa, quali le tradizioni e i detti del Profeta. Infine, si faranno alcuni cenni alla nascita della prosa letteraria, sul finire dell’epoca omayyade.

PROGRAMMA/CONTENUTO

•Il contesto storico-culturale della penisola arabica preislamica; il sistema tribale.

•I dibattiti religiosi della tarda antichità

•L’oralità nell’Arabia preislamica; i professionisti della voce: il ruolo del poeta nella Ǧāhiliyya.

•Struttura e tematiche della qaṣīda. Cenni sulla metrica.

•La tardiva registrazione della poesia preislamica e il problema delle fonti. 

•Il profeta Muhammad e il Corano. La nascita della comunità musulmana.

•Il periodo dei Califfi ben Guidati e l’espansione territoriale. La fissazione del testo coranico e l’evoluzione della scrittura araba.

•Le tradizioni del profeta e la nascita della storiografia annalistica

•Le prime traduzioni delle fonti elleniche

•Lo scisma della comunità musulmana e la nascita della šī‘a

•La dinastia omayyade e l’evoluzione della poesia.

•a poesia d'amore (ġazal), la poesia encomiastica e le naqā’id (tenzoni poetiche).

•La nascita della prosa d’arte (adab) e le sue diverse declinazioni.

MODALITA' DIDATTICHE

Il corso ha una durata approssimativa di 10 settimane per un totale di 36 ore di lezioni frontali, suddivise in 3 ore di lezioni settimanali.

Per ciascun argomento sarà presentato il contesto storico-culturale insieme alla produzione letteraria che lo ha accompagnato. Testi scelti di poesia e prosa saranno letti e analizzati, con particolare attenzione ai nessi che li legano all’ambiente sociale o al dibattito filosofico, entro cui sono stati composti.

MODALITA' D'ESAME

L'esame finale consta di una prova orale, per la quale è obbligatoria l’iscrizione online sul sito d'Ateneo.

La prova finale orale consiste in un colloquio volto a verificare le conoscenze e le competenze acquisite.

OVERVIEW

A course in Arabic literature and culture.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aimes at offering the student the basic notions of Arabic culture and literature through diachronic readings that pay particular attention to the socio-cultural dimentions of beduine society, as well as to its literary production forms. Within this topic, attention will be paid to the birth and progress of Islam with its religious, social and artistic influences.

Main examples of pre-Islamic poetry, early islamic literary production and prose production will be analyzed.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course provides participants with a general knowledge of the Arabic culture and its literary production from the VI century to the end of the Umayyad period. Special attention will be paid to the cultural elements which characterized the Arabian peninsula in its pre-Islamic beginnings, and to the birth of Islam, with particular reference to the historical events which are considered the founding acts of the Muslim community. Late antique religious debates shall be dealt with in order to highlight the relation of continuity existing between Islam, Christianity and Judaism. Students shall also be provided with an exhaustive introduction to the salient features of pre-Islamic poetry and Koranic prose. Traditions of the Saying and Doings of the Prophet Muhammad shall be presented, as well as the early beginning of the adab prose.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

• The pre-Islamic framework of the Arabian peninsula; the tribal system. 
• Late antique religious debates.
• Orality in the pre-Islamic Arabian peninsula. The role of poets during the Ǧāhiliyya.
• Themes, motifs, structure and poetic form of the qaṣīda.
• The issue of authenticity pertaining to the Arabic texts which have been foundational to the early history of Islam.
• Prophet Muhammad and the Holy Koran; the birth of the Muslim community
• The Rightly Guided Caliphs. The fixation of the Koranic script.
• The main collections of Saying and Doings of the Prophet Muhammad.
• The Greek impact on Arabic literature.
• The schism of the Muslim community into Sunnite and Shia branches.
• The Umayyad period and the evolution of poetry
• Love poetry (ġazal), encomiastic poetry (madīḥ) and duelling poetry (naqā’id).
• The rise and growth of adab collections. 

TEACHING METHODS

This module will be taught over the first semester (october-december), with 3 hours seminars per week, accounting for a total of 36 hours lessons.

Students will be introduced to the rich literary heritage of the Arabic language, starting from the golden odes of Pre-Islamic Arabia, ending with the early beginning of literary prose by the end of the Umayyad period. A historical framework will be first presented together with the literature produced along that same period. Chosen poetry and prose texts will be analyzed, with a particular focus on their connections to the social and historical environment in which they were created.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The final exam consists of an oral test. Online registration for the final exam is mandatory.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral test consists of an interview aimed to assess acquired competences in terms of knowledge and understanding of the course contents.
