PRESENTAZIONE

L'insegnamento di Letteratura araba II intende trattare alcuni argomenti principali della letteratura araba moderna: il periodo della nahḍa a cavallo tra XIX e XX secolo, la continuità di alcuni generi letterari tradizionali, nonché l’emergere e l’affermarsi di altri, quali il romanzo e il racconto breve. Particolare interesse sarà rivolto ai generi e ai movimenti letterari, agli esponenti di rilievo e alle opere significative della letteratura egiziana nella prima metà del XX secolo.

- L'insegnamento prevede 54 ore, equivalenti a 9 CFU, e sarà suddiviso in tre moduli su due semestri. Le lezioni del primo semestre (18 ore) saranno tenute dal prof. Nasser Ismail, mentre quelle del secondo semestre (36 ore) saranno tenute dal prof. Abdelhaleem Solaiman.

- Gli studenti che hanno inserito l’insegnamento di letteratura araba II da 6 CFU dovranno seguire il secondo e il terzo modulo che si terranno al secondo semestre.

OBIETTIVI FORMATIVI

L’insegnamento si propone di fornire agli studenti i principali strumenti interpretativi dei fenomeni e dei generi della letteratura araba moderna e contemporanea. Intende inoltre fornire capacità di analisi e di interpretazione dei testi trattati e discutere sulle questioni letterarie, linguistiche, socio - culturali e politiche più importanti del dibattito intellettuale arabo e soprattutto egiziano del Novecento.

OBIETTIVI FORMATIVI (DETTAGLIO) E RISULTATI DI APPRENDIMENTO

- Gli obiettivi dell'insegnamento:

• Fornire agli studenti una preparazione di base della letteratura araba moderna, in particolare quella egiziana;
• Fornire una panoramica sulle principali tendenze narrative nel XX secolo in relazione all’evoluzione politica e socio-culturale; analizzare i temi, le opere e gli autori più rappresentativi e rilevanti del periodo e individuare la loro specificità nel contesto letterario arabo moderno e contemporaneo;
• Sviluppare capacità di analisi e di interpretazione delle opere trattate;
• Stimolare gli studenti alla riflessione su alcune questioni letterarie, culturali e socio-politiche;
• Ampliare la conoscenza del lessico, della fraseologia e delle strutture sintattiche della lingua araba standard attraverso la lettura e l’analisi di estratti in lingua originale.

- Al termine dell’insegnamento lo studente:

• ِAvrà una conoscenza approfondita del contesto storico-politico e letterario che caratterizzò il mondo arabo nell'800 e nel '900;
• Conoscerà principali tendenze, autori e testi della letteratura araba ed egiziana moderna;
• Sarà in grado di poter collocare i testi trattati nella storia della letteratura araba e di metterli in relazione con eventi storici e con altre opere e autori;
• Avrà capacità di analisi dei temi e delle caratteristiche stilistiche dei testi letterari trattati;
• Acquisirà il lessico letterario e storico-politico specialistico riferito ai temi discussi nell'insegnamento.

Non sono previsti requisiti specifici.

PROGRAMMA/CONTENUTO

- L'insegnamento prevede 54 ore equivalenti a 9 CFU e sarà suddiviso in tre moduli su due semestri.

- Gli studenti che hanno inserito l’insegnamento di Letteratura araba II da 6 CFU dovranno seguire il secondo e il terzo modulo che si terranno al secondo semestre.

1. Modulo I (18 ore al primo semestre):

- Introduce il contesto storico, culturale e letterario del periodo della nahḍa. Particolare attenzione verrà rivolta agli elementi letterari di continuità e di rottura con i periodi classico e premoderno; ai pionieri della nahḍa e le loro opere; al ruolo della stampa e delle traduzioni nella "rinascita" letteraria e culturale.

- Prevede la lettura in lingua originale e l'analisi di alcuni brani tratti da:

• Taḫlīṣ al-ibrīz ilā talḫīs Bārīz (Dall’oro raffinato in Parigi condensato) di Rifā‘a al-Ṭahṭāwī (m. 1873);
• al-Sāq ‘alà al-sāq fī mā huwa al-Fāryāq (Una gamba sull’altra, per quanto riguarda Faryāq) di Fāris al-Šidyāq (m. 1887);
• Ḥadīṯ ‘Īsà ibn Hishām aw fatra min al zaman (Il discorso di ‘Īsà ibn Hišām, ovvero un intervallo di tempo) di Muḥammad al Muwayliḥī (m. 1930).

- Affronta inoltre il quadro storico-letterario del mondo arabo all’inizio del '900, la nascita del romanzo e del racconto breve in particolar modo in Egitto. In questo contesto saranno trattate le seguenti opere:

• Zaynab di Muḥammad Ḥusayn Haykal (m. 1956);
• Fī 'l-qiṭār (In treno) di Muḥammad Taymūr (m. 1921);
• ‘Ammī Mitwallī di Maḥmūd Taymūr (m. 1973);
• Ḥadīṯ al-qarya (Conversazione di campagna) di Maḥmūd Ṭāhir Lāšīn (m. 1954).

2. Modulo II (18 ore al secondo semestre):

- Tratta l’evoluzione del romanzo in Egitto nella prima metà del '900 e si sofferma sugli autori più importanti e sulle tematiche più salienti, quali il rapporto tra mondo arabo e potenze coloniali europee, la questione dell'identità nazionale, culturale e religiosa, il rapporto tra tradizione e modernità e l'emancipazione sociale e femminile. Nella contestualizzazione del quadro storico e letterario saranno analizzate alcune tra le prime opere narrative moderne di carattere autobiografico:

• al-Ayyām (I giorni) di Ṭaha Ḥusayn (m. 1973);
• Adīb di Ṭaha Ḥusayn;
• Yawmiyyāt nā’ib fī l-aryāf (Diario di un procuratore di campagna) di Tawfīq al-Ḥakīm (m. 1987).

3. Modulo III (18 ore al secondo semestre):

- Il modulo include una parte monografica dedicata al premio Nobel egiziano Naǧīb Maḥfūẓ (m. 2006) e al suo contributo all'evoluzione del romanzo nelle sue varie tendenze, soprattutto in relazione agli eventi cruciali che hanno segnato la storia contemporanea del mondo arabo: il processo di decolonizzazione, la crisi dei regimi postcoloniali e i cambiamenti politici e socioculturali nel mondo arabo nella seconda metà del '900.

- Prevede la lettura in lingua originale e della traduzione italiana, nonché analisi di alcuni estratti dei seguenti romanzi:

• Zuqāq al Midaqq (Il vicolo del Mortaio 1947);
• Mirāmār (1967);
• al-Karnak (Il caffè degli intrighi - 1971/74);
• Yawm maqtal al-zaʿīm (Il giorno in cui fu ucciso il Leader 1985).

N.B.: Oltre agli argomenti e ai testi indicati nel programma, ogni studente dovrà aver letto almeno due opere a scelta (romanzi o antologie di racconti o poesie) tradotte dall’arabo in italiano e dovrà saperle esporre e analizzare in modo approfondito nella prova finale.

على الطلاب دراسة كل المادة العلمية المذكورة في البرنامج الدراسي، وكل الفصول والفقرات المقتطعة من القصص والروايات المذكورة في قائمة موضوعات البرنامج. 

إضافة إلى المادة العلمية المتضمنة في البرنامج الدراسي (تاريخ الأدب والأعمال الأدبية من قصص وروايات)، على الطلاب قراءة روايتين أو رواية وعمل أدبي أو ثقافي آخر قراءة مستقلة ومعمقة لعرضهما أثناء الامتحان النهائي. نُذكِّر مجددا أن هذين العملين هما جزء مكمل للبرنامج وليسا بديلا بأي حال من الأحوال عنه.

- Per gli studenti non frequentanti il docente metterà a disposizione su aulaweb le diapositive contenenti gli appunti principali delle lezioni e i testi analizzati in formato pdf. Gli argomenti trattati dovranno essere approfonditi dal libro di testo indicato nella bibliografia: Isabella Camera d’Afflitto, Letteratura araba contemporanea. Dalla nahdah a oggi, Carocci, Roma, 2007.

MODALITA' DIDATTICHE

Lezioni frontali in modalità presenziale, seminari e proiezione di materiali audio-visivi (Film e documentari) funzionali alla comprensione dei temi e dei testi previsti nel corso. Gli studenti saranno invitati a partecipare all’analisi dei testi, alla discussione degli argomenti proposti nel programma e alla preparazione di elaborati e presentazioni individuali.

INIZIO LEZIONI

Le lezioni di Letteratura araba II a.a. 2025/2026 sono annuali e saranno tenute nel primo semestre (18 ore) dal prof. Nasser Ismail e nel secondo semestre (36 ore) dal prof. Abdelhaleem Solaiman. Le lezioni del primo semestre inizieranno il 3 ottobre 2025, secondo il seguente orario:

• Venerdì ore 15:00-17:00 aula 11 presso l'Albergo dei poveri.

MODALITA' D'ESAME

La verifica prevede un esame orale della durata di quindici minuti circa e consiste in una serie di domande sui vari temi e testi indicati e trattati nel corso e che riguardano la storia, i generi, gli esponenti e le opere più significative della letteratura araba moderna.

MODALITA' DI ACCERTAMENTO

Durante l’esame orale il docente verificherà l’apprendimento valutando la completezza, l’accuratezza e la chiarezza dell'esposizione da parte dello studente degli argomenti storico letterari del corso. Verrà inoltre valutata la capacità dello studente di collocare i movimenti, gli autori e i testi trattati nella storia della letteratura araba moderna e contemporanea e di analizzare le opere da lui scelte e studiate.

OVERVIEW

Arabic Literature II aims to address some of the main themes of modern and contemporary Arabic literature: the Nahḍa period, the continuity of some traditional literary genres as well as the emergence and the affirmation of others such as the novel and the short story. The course will focus on literary movements and genres, notable exponents and significant works of twentieth-century Egyptian literature.

This is a one-year course (54 hours - 9 CFU) and is divided into three teaching parts.

Students who choose Arabic literature II worth 6 CFU are required to take the second and the third parts which will be held in the second semester.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

- It intends to provide an overview of the main narrative trends in the twentieth century in relation to the political and socio-cultural evolution, analyse the most representative and relevant themes, authors and works of that period, as well as identify their specificity in the modern and contemporary Arabic literary context.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

This module aims to:

• provide students with basic knowledge of modern Arabic literature, their main literary trends and texts;
• offer students methodological knowledge and critical thinking that enable the understanding of other authors and works from the same period;
• develop analytical and interpretation skills;
• broaden the knowledge of lexicon, phraseology and syntactic structures of Standard Arabic through the reading and analysis of some passages in original language;
• encourage students to reflect on literary, cultural and socio-political issues.

- At the end of the course the student will:

• have an in-depth knowledge of the historical, political and literary context which characterised the Arab world in the 19th and 20th centuries;
• know the main trends, authors and texts of modern Arabic and Egyptian literatures;
• be able to identify texts in the context of the history of Arabic literature, to link them to historical events, and other works and authors;
• be able to analyse the themes and the stylistic features of the literary texts dealt with;
• acquire the specialised literary, historical and political lexicon related to the topics discussed in the course.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

1. Part I (18 hours in the first semester):

- Introduces the historical, cultural and literary context of the nahḍa period. Particular attention will be paid to the literary elements of continuity and rupture with the classical and pre-modern periods, to the nahḍa pioneers and their works; and to the role of the press and translations in the literary and cultural "renaissance".

- Includes reading in the Arabic language and the analysis of some passages taken from:

• Taḫlīṣ al-ibrīz ilā talḫīs Bārīz (The Extraction of Gold or an Overview of Paris) by Rifā‘a al-Ṭahṭāwī (d. 1873);
• al-Sāq ‘alà al-sāq fī mā huwa al-Fāryāq (Leg over Leg) by Fāris al-Šidyāq (d. 1887);
• Ḥadīṯ ‘Īsà ibn Hishām aw fatra min al zaman (What ʿĪsā ibn Hishām told us) by Muḥammad al Muwayliḥī (d. 1930).

- Covers the historical-literary context of the Arab world at the beginning of the twentieth century, the rise of the novel and the short story, particularly in Egypt.

The following works will be analysed:

• Zaynab by Muḥammad Ḥusayn Haykal (d. 1956);
• Fī l-qiṭār (By train) by Muḥammad Taymūr (d. 1921);
• ‘Ammī Mitwallī by Maḥmūd Taymūr (d. 1973);
• Ḥadīṯ al-qarya (Village small talk) by Maḥmūd Ṭāhir Lāšīn (d. 1954).

2. Part II (18 hours in the second semester):

- This module deals with the evolution of the novel in Egypt and in other Arab countries in the first half of the twentieth century. It will focus on the most relevant themes such as: the relationship between the Arab world and the European colonial powers; the national, cultural and religious identity; the relationship between tradition and modernity; the social and female emancipation. In the context of the historical and socio-literary framework of that period, particular emphasis will be given to the analysis of the first modern autobiographical narrative works:

• al-Ayyām (The Days) by Ṭaha Ḥusayn (d. 1973);
• Adīb by Ṭaha Ḥusayn;
• Yawmiyyāt nā’ib fī l-aryāf (Diary of a Country Prosecutor) by Tawfīq al-Ḥakīm (d. 1987).

3. Part III (18 hours in the second semester)

This module deals with the Egyptian Nobel Prize winner Naǧīb Maḥfūẓ (d. 2006) and his contribution to the evolution of the novel, especially in relation to the crucial events that have shaped the contemporary history of the Arab world: the process of decolonisation, the Arab-Israeli conflict and the crisis of the post-colonial regime in Egypt.

- The following works will be covered:

• Zuqāq al Midaqq (Midaq Alley 1947);
• Mirāmār (1967);
• al-Karnak (Karnak Café - 1971/74);
• Yawm maqtal al-zaʿīm (The Day the Leader was Killed 1985).

N.B .: Students must read at least two works of their choice (novels or anthologies of short stories or poems), translated from Arabic into Italian or English, and must be able to present and analyse them in depth in the exam.

- The syllabus is the same for non-attending students. Bibliographical material and texts covered during the course will be available on Aulaweb.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures and seminars. Texts and audiovisual materials, such as films and documentaries, will be provided in class. Students will be asked to participate in class discussions, to read and comment on several texts, both in Italian and in Arabic, as well as to prepare summaries and oral presentations.

The lessons will be held in the first semester according to the university teaching timetable.

LESSONS START

The Arabic Literature II course for the 2025/2026 academic year is an annual course. It will be taught in the first semester (18 hours) by Prof. Nasser Ismail and in the second semester (36 hours) by Prof. Abdelhaleem Solaiman. Classes for the first semester will start on October 3, 2025, and will be held according to the following schedule:

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral examination: the examination will last approx. 15 minutes for each student. It will consist of a number of questions on the various topics dealt with during the course, regarding the history and the most important genres, authors and works in modern Arabic literature, and particularly Egyptian.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The student’s learning will be evaluated based on a clear, accurate and comprehensive presentation of the historical and literary topics of the course. The student's ability to place the movements, authors and texts in the history of modern and contemporary Arabic literature as well as their ability to analyse the works chosen will also be evaluated.
