This module aims to provide students with knowledge about a set of models and methods of Operations Research that will enable them to deal with decision problems. In particular, students will learn how to use mathematical linear programming models with continuous variables to formulate certain classes of decision problems, and they will learn how to find the optimal solution using the Simplex algorithm; in addition, students will learn how to perform sensitivity analysis and apply duality theory. A very important type of model that will be explained is the integer programming model that allows to face discrete decision problems; the branch and bound and cutting planes methods will be explained for this model. Finally, graph theory and network flow models will be presented; these classes of models are very important as they can model practical decision problems in telecommunications.

The module aims at providing knowledge on the use of mathematical methods to describe real-world phenomena, such as heat diffusion and wave propagation, as well as to take optimal decisions. More specifically, the students will be able to classify and manage the main analytical solution methods for linear partial differential equations. In addition, the students will learn how to manage multistage optimization problems by means of dynamic programming, and how to find the solution to nonlinear programming problems.

The course aims to provide students with all the basic notions required to understand, design, configure, and manage a telecommunications network based on Internet technology. Along with these notions, the basic concepts of digital security are also introduced, with particular emphasis on encryption techniques. To this end, the following topics, in particular, are presented and analyzed: • Introduction to Internet Architecture and Protocols: IPv4 (management of IP addresses); IP routing algorithms and protocols. The Internet society is based on technological solution for continuative and pervasive connection of persons and objects (IoT). In the module, students are introduced to a critical comparison of different radio technologies able to guarantee such global connection, including terrestrial and satellite solutions. Taking a few case studies with different requirements, contraints and functionalities, students are guided to explore diferrent options and choose the most suitable, economic and performant. Radio coverage strategies will be examined by comparing different cell planning methodologies so that students can learn how different ambients and territories can be served pervasively saving infrastructure costs adopting specific solutions. Terrestrial mobile telephone standards like GSM/GPRS, WCDMA and LTE will be examined and compared with satellite technologies like Globalstar and Iridium. Thanks to this wide technological survey students will acquire confidence and competence in designing solutions based on multi-radio interface devices able to switch continuosuly and seamless the access network through vertical handover. The smartphone platform will be considered as a multi-standard platform able to connect persons and things beyond the telephone network, including Wifi, Bluetooth, RFID, BLE, NFC. The added value represented by position estimation of terminal, persons and things will be considered with reference to applications for logistics, transportation and health. In such view, methodologies based on terrestrial radio fingerprinting and satellite-based global systems (GPS/Galileo/Egnos) will be introduced.

In this module several Machine learning methods applied to pattern recognition are presented and - in particular - the case of classification of images from real domains is discussed. Students will learn how to estimate a probability density function using a set of training samples and how to reduce the dimensionality of the feature vectors of a set of samples. They will be able to classify samples on the basis of decision theory and linear and nonlinear classifiers (MDM, k-nn, SVMs, Random forest). They will learn how to design Neural Networks and Deep Learning classifiers. Students will learn how to assess the accuracy of a supervised classifier. They will also be able to optimize the parameters of clustering algorithms (including fuzzy algorithms) and validate the results obtained.

The aim is to understand different technological solutions and algorithms to control and design interworking elements within a network. The students will acquire the necessary know-how to design and manage advanced interworking technology, understand main protocols at application layer, and investigate technological challenges, still object of research both industrial and academic, as well as quality of service provision over heterogeneous networks, satellite, space, and interplanetary networks.

Elementary queueing models of the birth-death type will be examined in detali, along with Markov Chains, one instance of semi-Markov sytems (M/G/1), and open queueing networks. The student will be able to use the analytical tools in modeling and analysis of networking devices and networks, and to implement them in numerical computer calculations.

The Digital Image Processing course provides students with the tools to understand the algorithms for the numerical, symbolic and semantic processing of digital images, distinguishing linear and non-linear methods, adaptive approaches and focusing on the criteria for evaluating the results. Students will learn to understand the most advanced approaches and methods, distinguishing established approaches from the most innovative and state-of-the-art solutions. One of the main objectives is to provide the student with the ability to orient himself in a critical and constructive way when faced with the offer of Internet sites that fail to grasp the complexity of the problem, propose confused, standardized and often limited approaches if not incorrect solutions in this specialist sector. Soft -skill competency of functional literacy (reading and critical use of sources), and ability to learn (self-learning). Another objective concerns the ability to analyze a problem, break it down into the main sub-parts and choose the most suitable approaches for each phase (soft-skills competence in project creation: orientation, problem solving and project planning). The practical SW laboratories allow the student to understand the theory and put it into practice with specialized tools capable of analyzing in detail all the steps and intermediate results of the most important state-of-the-art image processing algorithms. Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education) and 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) of the 2030 Agenda are addressed, enabling the student to acquire strong skills to face the era of digital transformation related to various application fields of digital information sources.

The coordination of these concepts aims at providing the students with the necessary skills to understand how to develop simple network applications, for instance Cloud Computing and/or Internet of Things. Attendance, active participation to lectures, and individual study will allow students: - to appreciate the advantages/opportunities deriving from the use of Multi Thread Internet applications; - to design and implement Multi Thread Internet applications; - to design and implement Client/Server applications; - to design and implement RESTful APIs; - to use, design and implement security protocols and mechanisms for Client/Server applications and RESTful APIs.

The module is aimed at providing machine learning basic and advanced techniques for data-driven signal processing for autonomous systems design. In particular, perception and control modules in autonomous systems rely more and more on signal processing approaches whose parametrization can be learned from observing multimedia heterogeneous signals produced by the artificial system while performing specific tasks. The module analyses data acquisition and processing tradeoffs between edge and cloud resources on the basis of real-time, computational, and energy consumption requirements. Specific attention will be devoted to high-dimensional data processing (with real practical examples in Python), showing how deep learning approaches can be adapted and optimized for working with limited computational capabilities.

Remote Sensing — Based on the concepts ruling the generation and propagation of electromagnetic wave fields, the objective is to provide the students with basic knowledge about the fundamentals and basic definitions of remote sensing; passive remote sensing in the optical, microwaves, and infrared frequency bands; active remote sensing and radar imaging; instrumentation for remote sensing. Satellite Images — The objective is to provide the students with basic knowledge about past, current, and forthcoming space missions for Earth observation; parametric models for the statistics of optical and radar data; probabilistic graphical models and structured output learning for the semantic segmentation of satellite imagery; supervised regression for bio/geophysical parameter retrieval from remote sensing. In this framework, machine learning techniques rooted in the areas of ensemble learning, neural networks, and kernel machines will be discussed as well.
