The teaching unit aims to provide a throughout understanding of the procedures that are relevant for the maritime navigation, also considering the proper sources of law: a theoretical part allows to focus on geodesy, cartography and astronomy items related to navigation, while an operational part will focus on the methods that are necessary to carry out a reliable voyage planning and a correct execution, taking into account the use of nautical charts and publications, Aids to Navigation and the International Code of Signals. The position fixing will be analysed both in terms of coastal and celestial navigation considering the use and control of traditional instruments such as the magnetic and gyro compass and the marine sextant.

The teaching unit aims at providing students with practical skill and expertise about fundamentals of shipbuilding and the ship structural design and analysis process from a global view to construction details, showing typical assessment approaches and languages, i.e. structural plans and drawings, used to describe the hull, its structural lay-out, its components and equipment. Various merchant ship types are presented, highlighting peculiarities of each. Rules and regulations of classification societies are presented from the life cycle management perspective, starting from shipbuilding in shipyard, overviewing the inspection, maintenance and repair approaches until life end and scrapping.

The teaching unit aims at introducing the basics of telecommunications, from signals (sampling, modulation, frequency analysis) to computer networks (transmission media and network protocols). At the end of the teaching unit, emphasis will be given to some of the main telecommunication systems usually present onboard by analysing the technology behind RADAR, SONAR and GPS.

The teaching unit aims at raising a theoretical physical-based awareness of the vessel's dynamical response to all the main means of propulsion and control, under any environmental and bathymetric condition. Key topic is the development of a critical, practical, and operative mathematical force vector analysis framework in support to the decision-making process, which lies at the base of the safe handling of vessels with respect to route planning, ports building and management. Amongst the analysed scenarios: course stability and IMO standards at speed, calm and rough weather manoeuvrability (wind, waves and current), restricted waters and canals interactions, tugs and towing operations, berthing and unberthing with mooring lines, anchoring and emergency operations management. Finally, students will be able to plan and schedule operations with a specialistic critical and technical perspective which lies at the base of modern bridge simulation infrastructures.

108850 ELECTRONIC CARTOGRAPHY AND NAVIGATION ICAR/06 12 The teaching unit aims to provide theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the use of electronic cartography and Geographic Information Systems, with a focus on the content, structure and data quality of Electronic Nautical Cartography (ENC) and the main features of ECDIS (Electronic Chart Systems for Nautical Navigation). Furthermore, it is intended to provide knowledge of the principles, operation, error sources and correction methods of modern electronic navigation aids, in order to achieve accurate position fixing. In particular, the use of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology and its augmented satellite services, the Loran system and echosounder technique are explored. Statistical tools for assessing the accuracy and precision of position fixes are also introduced. From a strictly operational point of view, the teaching unit provides an insight into modern navigation techniques, watchkeeping and related instruments and procedures, such as radar, COLREGs, ship routing and signalling systems. Operational activities will mainly take place in lab and bridge simulator environment.

The teaching unit aims to provide the theoretical knowledge and practical experience of using electronic cartography and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for the management, analysis and visualization of carthographic data. Particular attention is given to data content, data structure and data quality of Electronic Nautical Cartography (ENC) and the main features of ECDIS (Electronic Chart Systems for Nautical Navigation). Statistical tools for evaluating the quality of measurements and the quantities derived from them, are also provided.

The teaching unit aims to provide theorical knowledge of the principles, operation, sources of error and correction methods of modern electronic aids to navigation in order to achieve accurate position fixing. The main system presented is the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and its augmented satellite services, of which practical experience of acquisition and subsequent analysis is also offered; in addition, the Loran system and the Echo Sounder technique are also introduced. On the strict operational side, the teaching unit offers a view on modern navigation techniques, watchkeeping and related instruments and procedures, such as the radar, COLREGs, ship's routeing and ship's reporting systems. The operational activities will take place mostly in lab and bridge simulator environment.

"The aim of the teaching unit gives the essential elements for understanding of analysis and exploitation of the electromagnetic phenomena. In the first part of the teaching unit the instruments analysis of DC circuits are introduced. The second part of the teaching unit will focus on the AC circuit analysis (single and three phase electrical circuits). The principal application aspects of exploitation of power electric phenomena are also introduced. At the end of the teaching, the Student will have the knowledge to read and to understand the diagram of an electrical circuit and to determine the main quantities related to it."

In particular the teaching unit will provide the capability of modelling, simulating, and optimizing freights and people flows in ports considering both the seaside and ground-side operations.

The teaching unit aims at raising a theoretical physical-based awareness of the vessel's dynamical response to all the main means of propulsion and control, under any environmental and bathymetric condition. Key topic is the development of a critical, practical, and operative mathematical force vector analysis framework in support to the decision-making process, which lies at the base of the safe handling of vessels with respect to route planning, ports building and management. Amongst the analysed scenarios: course stability and IMO standards at speed, calm and rough weather manoeuvrability (wind, waves and current), restricted waters and canals interactions, tugs and towing operations, berthing and unberthing with mooring lines, anchoring and emergency operations management. Finally, students will be able to plan and schedule operations with a specialistic critical and technical perspective which lies at the base of modern bridge simulation infrastructures.
